How Black literature changed Britain

Monday, 8 Nov 2021, 8pm

The even is over, but you can still find out about the Black literature timeline

A livestreamed event celebrating Black British literature, by The Guardian Live.

“To mark Black History Month, the British Library has created a new timeline that explores the rich history of Black British literature through around 50 key texts. From Olaudah Equiano’s powerful account of his enslavement in the Americas to Andrea Levy’s story of the Windrush generation, Small Island, from 18th century poet Phyllis Wheatley to Michaela Coel’s Chewing Gum Dreams, these books include celebrated contemporary stories and many overlooked classics.”

Guardian journalist Joseph Harker will chair a panel of speakers, including:

  • Benjamin Zephaniah, writer and dub poet;
  • Margaret Busby, pioneering publisher; and
  • Deirdre Osborne, reader in English Literature and Drama at Goldsmiths.

“Join them as they discuss the groundbreaking authors writing today, and explore the rich Black literary tradition that precedes them – and its impact on our culture.”
