'A Story of a People Called Black' is an orchestral exploration of Black history. With the melodies of a 50 piece orchestra, a full rhythm section, vocalist and MC we'll take you on a journey from West Africa to the American South and finally to Manchester aka Cottonopolis.
With special tribute paid to the warriors of the Haitian Revolution, the rebels of Jamaica and the solidarity of Mancunion mill workers, we'll bring this history to life with spoken word poetry, visual art and an orchestral extravaganza crafted with love.
This is the personal history of composer Gary Washington and his ancestors, and a celebration of the wider African diaspora during this time - who fought and resisted enslavement at every step, and until the very end.
We'll have original spoken word poetry by Deborah Black, visual art by Akinyemi Oludele and music composed by Gary Washington.
