Following the celebration of 50 years of the Manchester Caribbean Carnival this summer, Black History Month events this year will be on the theme of Carnival!, looking at the history and the celebrations through workshops, music, poetry, family activities and food!

Organised by the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre and Education Trust in partnership with Manchester Libraries.

We Are Carnival! party

Explore historical carnival memories through archives via an exhibition, film provided by North West Film Archive, music by Manchester Carnival affiliated DJ and Host Kemoy Walker, a family arts workshop by local Artist Tina Ramos Ekongo, spoken word performances by Young Identity and delicious Caribbean food courtesy of Buzzrocks Caribbean Restaurant. 

Programme for the day (most events are drop-in with no booking; 2 events require you to book):

Throughout the day a book display, archive photo and sound exhibition and archive footage provided by North West Film Archive. 

2pm:  Manchester’s Carnival affiliated DJ and Host Kemoy Walker and throughout the day

4pm – 4.30pm: 1970s BBC 30 min documentary screening of ‘A Tale of Black Families’ in partnership with North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University 

4.30pm – 5pm: DJ Kemoy Walker and MC performance

6pm – 7pm: Buzzrocks Caribbean food

    The Resource Centre includes hundreds of books on the history of race, migration and ethnicity, as well as documents, leaflets, posters, photographs and ephemera donated by BAME communities across Greater Manchester.
